Reds give manager David Bell the axe

The Cincinnati Reds announced Sunday night that they are firing manager David Bell, effective immediately. Bell, 52, was originally hired by the team in October 2018. Bench coach Freddy Benowitz will serve as interim manager for the final five games of the 2024 season. “David has provided the solidity we’ve needed in our clubhouse over the past few seasons.” said Nick Krall, president of baseball operations. “We felt that a major league team needed a change moving forward. We have not achieved the success we expected and need to start focusing on 2025.” Krall will answer questions about the decision at 11 a.m. Monday. He compiled a record of 409–456 in his six seasons after a 2–0 loss against the Pittsburgh Pirates, Bell was born and raised in Cincinnati in 1995, he would play for various teams including the Seattle Mariners, St. Louis Cardinals, San Francisco Giants, and Philadelphia Phillies. He was a manager for some of the Reds’ affiliated minor league teams before taking on various coaching roles throughout the MLB starting in 2012. Bell was born and raised in Cincinnati. He is a graduate of Moeller High School.

Before managing the Reds, Bell was a former MLB player who played 12 seasons. His first season was in 1995, and he would play for various teams, including the Seattle Mariners, St. Louis Cardinals, San Francisco Giants, and Philadelphia Phillies.

After retiring from MLB as a player in 2006, Bell served as a manager for some of the Reds’ minor league teams before taking on various coaching roles throughout MLB beginning in 2012.

Despite his Cincinnati roots, his role managing the Reds in 2018 was his first time working for the team in any capacity outside of the minor leagues.
