The daughter of tech tycoon Mike Lynch, who died with her father on the luxury yacht Bayesian, has been described as a “diamond in a sea of stars” by a survivor of the tragedy.
Hannah Lynch, 18, was one of 22 people aboard her father’s luxury yacht Bayesian when it capsized in stormy weather on Monday.
Her body was found with her father by rescue teams following the disaster on the island of Sicily last week.
A homicide investigation has been opened, prosecutor Ambrogio Cardozio announced at a press conference on Saturday.
Bayesian’s chief steward Sasha Murray, who was rescued from the boat, said: “Those who know Hannah know that she is a diamond in the sea. Bright, beautiful and always shining.
“What most people don’t see is the extraordinarily strong, deep and loving relationship she shared with her parents, whom she adored more than anything else.”
“I have no doubt that the Irish, Latin fire that burned in his soul kept that spirited determination alive,” he added.
Morgan Stanley chairman Jonathan Bloomer, his wife Judith Bloomer, Clifford Chance attorney Christopher Morvillo and his wife Neda Morvillo also died.
Who died on the Bayesian boat?
British tech tycoon Mike Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah were initially among the unknown after his superyacht Bayesian capsized in a storm off the coast of Sicily early Monday morning.
On Saturday morning, Italian authorities announced that a manslaughter investigation had been launched into the deaths of seven people, after a five-day operation that saw divers carefully making their way into cabin bedrooms.
Mr Lynch and Hanna were among seven people who died when the Bayesian spacecraft sank near Porticello at 5am local time on Monday.
Morgan Stanley chairman Jonathan Bloomer, his wife Judith Bloomer, Clifford Chance attorney Christopher Morvillo and his wife Neda Morvillo also died.
Regalto Thomas was the chef on board the superyacht and the first person to be confirmed dead.

A diver who searched Bayesian decomposition for missing passengers has spoken of his team’s strong emotional reaction to recovering Hannah Lynch’s body during a complex operation.
“Finding bodies underwater is our job, you get used to it and you keep your emotions in check, but finding the girl was different – it was an emotional moment because she was so young,” said Fabio Paletti, a member of the Italian firefighters’ diving team. The Sunday Times.
He added: “We entered a large room, but I couldn’t tell how big because I couldn’t see the walls. It led to a staircase down a narrow corridor that connected to the cabins.
“When entering the Bayesian, we had to check if there were any barriers that could interfere with the exit, which was important because you had very little time to exit.
“That means looking for a door that can be opened or a lid or a screen that can get in your way. You clear the path.

Tributes to a ‘brave’ and ‘selfless’ friend who died in Bayesian
Friends of Regalto “Rick” Thomas have paid tribute to their ‘brave’ and ‘selfless’ friend.
“Rick could have jumped and survived, I have no doubt about that. But he wouldn’t have left the people overboard and swam,” said his friend Gareth Williams. The Sunday Times.
“I read that the first mate was so young that Rick would have told him, ‘Get off the boat, man, I’m here, I’ve got this.’ That’s how he was.
He added: “He had this infectious smile and a brilliant, baritone voice. He was the kind of person you could sit in a room with — no TV, no music, just be. You didn’t have to say a word. You’d enjoy his company.

A tribute to ‘genius’ storyteller Mike Lynch
Susanna Gurdoon, a close family friend of the Lynches from Suffolk, shared heartfelt stories about Mike Lynch and who he was beyond being one of Britain’s biggest technologists.
Ms Gurdoon spoke of her “fantastic ability” to explain difficult and complex concepts in a way that people could easily understand.
His wife, Angela Bakeres, and his daughters told Mrs Gurdoon of his ability to “conjure up beautiful stories out of thin air”.
The next evening, Mr. Lynch told a story as the dinner plates were cleared about a hero about the age of Mrs. Gurdoon’s son going on adventures in search of treasure. She called it “magic.”
He added that he was not surprised to learn that Hanna had begun to show “serious literary promise”.

It could potentially commit crimes, the attorney says
State prosecutor Ambrogio Cardozio said he thought “there may have been crimes” surrounding the sinking of the boat.
He told reporters that the captain, the crew, persons in charge of supervision, the shipbuilder or others could have been responsible for the sinking.
He added: “We will establish the responsibility of each element – that will be done by the inquiry, so we cannot do it prematurely.
“For me, crimes may have been committed – it may have been a homicide – but we can only establish that if you give us time to investigate.
“Media time is completely different from lawyer time. We need a minimum period of time to arrive at a valid scientific conclusion.

Recap: Autopsies have not yet been carried out
The prosecuting attorney said that no information had been gathered from the examination of the seven dead.
Asked whether autopsies had been conducted, Raffaele Camarano told a press conference in Italy: “There is a full range of preliminary stages before the autopsies.”
According to the conference translation, the boat was hit by a drop and Italian officials said they were looking at how it could affect a vehicle and other vessels nearby.
The trial is currently an Italian affair with local involvement, but chief prosecutor Ambrogio Cardozio said: “I cannot tell you with certainty that the trial will be exclusively Italian.”
He added: “There will be improvements on that score, I’m sure.”
