Look at that fire scar flooding the Rio Ruidoso area. The National Weather Service reports that the Rio Ruidoso water level has risen from 1.7 feet to more than 5.5 feet. RIO RUIDOSO Emergency Management has issued an evacuation notice for the upper canyon area due to mud and life-threatening flood waters. As you saw there, if you’re in this area, you need to get to higher ground. If you are near a river, you will also be asked to evacuate immediately and find higher ground. An evacuation shelter has been set up at the White Mountain Relief Centre. It’s six, eight, seven at the White Mountain Sports Complex on Hall Road, and we’re also learning about water rescues happening this evening in Ruidoso. Areas such as Cedar Creek, the upper valley around Otto, and Eagle Creek had the heaviest rainfall. These include Gavilan Canyon from Sutton to Mender, Paradise Canyon from Country Club to Phillips Circle, and Hall Road from Royal to Paradise Canyon. Officials say it’s critical to avoid the upper valley because of the dangerous conditions there. Well, the floodgates reopened today in Ruidoso, and crews are making some big strides in making every area of the fire accessible to the public and the fire is 73% contained. The Salt Fire is now 71% contained. Together, they have burned more than 25,000 acres. The FBI is still investigating the cause of both fires tonight.
