The Eagles have become their biggest contender to fill their offensive coordinator vacancy.
Kellen Moore, who coached the Cowboys to three top-6 offensive rankings in four years in Dallas, will be the Eagles' new offensive coordinator, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported Saturday evening.
Moore was named offensive coordinator last season, replacing Brian Johnson, who was fired after three years with the Eagles. Moore will be the Eagles' third offensive coordinator in three years.
Moore spent last year as OC with the Chargers under Brandon Staley, who was fired last month and hired by former Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh.
Nick Siriani said Wednesday that whoever he brings in as offensive coordinator will bring his own scheme and structure as opposed to calling plays within Siriani's offense.
“We're bringing in a guy to do things he's done in the past to bring in new ideas,” he said Wednesday. “It would be crazy not to include some of the things we've done in the past here. …
“We're working on getting the best guy here for the job and a guy with a vision, a guy who's going to call the plays, a guy who's going to be a quarterback coach. … So it's about getting the right guy and we'll decide where that goes. But I think he's a Hiring to do the job and be in charge of the offense.
The Eagles finished seventh in the NFL in scoring this past season. They've scored fewer than 20 points in five of their last seven games, and the Eagles scored just nine points in a wild-card loss at Tampa.
Moore, 35, backed up parts of six seasons with the Lions (2012-14) and Cowboys (2015-17) before beginning his coaching career as the Cowboys' quarterbacks coach in 2018. A year later, he was promoted to offensive coordinator and held that position from 2019 to 2022.
They finished 6th, 17th, 1st and 4th in Moore's four years running the Cowboys offense, the first year under Jason Garrett and three under Mike McCarthy. Interestingly, Johnson and Moore both coached Dak Prescott at Mississippi State — Johnson and Moore with the Cowboys.
After the Cowboys lost to the 49ers 19-12 in last year's conference semifinals in Santa Clara, the Cowboys and Moore parted ways. A day later, he was hired by the Chargers, and in his one season in LA the Chargers went 5-12 and ranked 21st in offense.
Kellen is one of three known candidates for the job. Former Cards head coach Kliff Kingsbury and Texans quarterbacks coach Jerrod Johnson were also interviewed. All three are major college collegians.
That tells you how important this hiring was to Jalen Hurts, who underperformed under Johnson, who was coached in high school by Hurts' father.
“It's really important that those two guys work hand in hand to make sure we get back to where we need to be,” Siriani said.
During Moore's four years as offensive coordinator and play caller in Dallas, the Cowboys averaged 27.7 points per game – 2nd-most in the NFL behind the Chiefs' 28.8. In his five years as the QBs coach or OC in Dallas, they had the 4th-most passing yards per game in the NFL at 256.
Moore's only NFL playing time came at the end of the 2015 season with the Cowboys.
With Tony Romo injured and Brandon Weeden and Matt Cassel struggling, Moore played the last three games, starting two, and threw four touchdowns and six interceptions against the Jets, Bills and Washington. He threw for 435 yards with three TDs in his final NFL appearance against Washington. Moore is the first head coach or offensive or defensive coordinator in Eagles history to have played or coached with the Cowboys at any time prior to joining the Eagles.
