BARSTOW, Calif. (KABC) — A 4.9-magnitude earthquake hit the Barstow area Monday afternoon, hitting much of Southern California, according to the US Geological Survey.
The quake struck at a depth of nearly six miles around 1 p.m. Tremors were felt in Calabasas, Los Angeles, Glendale, Burbank, Pasadena and beyond in the high desert of the Inland Empire.
The quake was followed by two smaller aftershocks, one with a magnitude of 3.5, the USGS said.
Caltech seismologists say the state’s tremor warning system sent an alert 12 seconds before the quake was felt. The warning initially registered the quake as 5.0, which was downgraded.
The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department said there were no reports of injuries or damage in their area.
There was no immediate damage or injury from other areas.
Renowned seismologist Dr. Lucy Jones weighed X and said the tremor was located near the Calico fault crossing the Mojave.
“We’ve seen earthquakes of this magnitude many times in the Mojave Desert,” he posted, adding that since Monday’s quake was 50 km from the San Andreas fault, it doesn’t change the probability of a San Andreas earthquake.
