The U.S. women’s basketball team continues its quest for an eighth straight gold medal in Friday’s semifinal against Australia. So far, Team USA has mostly cruised through their games, besting Japan, Belgium and Germany in group play. Australia easily defeated Serbia in Wednesday’s quarterfinal match, while the United States defeated Nigeria 88-74.
A’ja Wilson averaged 20.3 points and 10 rebounds per game, while Breanna Stewart chipped in 18.5 points and 5.8 rebounds. Australia’s leading scorer is Sammy Whitcomb, who averages 14.8 points and 6 assists per game. Australia’s scouting report could be strong, led by head coach Sandy Brontello (who also coaches the New York Liberty).
