The U.S. women’s basketball team continues its quest for an eighth straight gold medal in Friday’s semifinal against Australia. So far, Team USA has mostly cruised through their games, besting Japan, Belgium and Germany in group play. Australia easily defeated Serbia in Wednesday’s quarterfinal match, while the United States defeated Nigeria 88-74.

A’ja Wilson averaged 20.3 points and 10 rebounds per game, while Breanna Stewart chipped in 18.5 points and 5.8 rebounds. Australia’s leading scorer is Sammy Whitcomb, who averages 14.8 points and 6 assists per game. Australia’s scouting report could be strong, led by head coach Sandy Brontello (who also coaches the New York Liberty).

  • Team USA 66, Australia 40 at the end of the third quarter

    The US continues to extend its lead and is locked in on the win. Australia struggled on offense, but the US did a better job on defense than that, and were mostly clean on offense. They are 6-for-12 from three, a big improvement from their previous games in these Olympics.

  • Diana Taurasi gets her first minutes in this game. Taurasi, 42, is a six-time Olympian and has hinted that this will be her last Olympics — but at these Games, if the score holds, she could claim her sixth gold on Sunday.

  • Australia takes a timeout as the USA goes on another run to make the score 58-36 with five minutes left in the third quarter. A’jah Wilson has 10 points and eight rebounds so far and has had another strong game with the USA.

    The 22-point lead was America’s largest ever; Things feel very solid and locked down at this point.

  • The second half is now underway and Australia are coming out with some fire. Alana Smith opened the scoring with a three-pointer, and Ajie MacBegor got a big block on A’jah Wilson. But Jackie Young made two free throws to make it 47-30.

They took advantage of that defense as well, scoring 14 points off Australia’s turnovers and 18 points off fast breaks.

    Brenna Stewart leads the way with 11 points, while Jackie Young has 10. A’jah Wilson had four points and six rebounds and was dominant on defense.

  • USA now has its biggest lead of the game with a score of 40-21. Both defense and offense were good for the American team.

  • Australia takes a timeout when the US goes on a 10-0 run to start the second quarter, now leading 30-16 after three-pointers by Sabrina Ionescu and Jewel Lloyd.

  • Brenna Stewart took the first three-point attempt for the USA and it was a miss. This does not bode well for America’s three-pronged problems…
