John Cena shocked the wrestling world Money in the bank He announced his retirement in 2025. During the post-show press conference, he shared details about his upcoming farewell tour, saying that WrestleMania will not be the end of his journey.
“It won’t end at WrestleMania,” Cena said. “WrestleMania will be my last WrestleMania. But if all goes according to plan, hopefully we’ll go straight from January to December.
Cena’s retirement tour is tentatively scheduled for 30-40 dates as he juggles other endeavors outside of the ring. In this limited schedule, the question of his ultimate opponents naturally arose. John made it clear that he wasn’t in a position to pick his opponents, but looked forward to facing whomever he was matched with.
Currently tied with Ric Flair as the 16-time world champion, Cena has the ability to break this record by winning another world title. Reflecting on this possibility, John acknowledged his recent failures, saying, “I’d love that opportunity, but those opportunities have come. Given my past record, I’ve got some work to do.
Cena teased that such an opportunity could be earned by winning the Royal Rumble or the Elimination Chamber match. He also mentioned next year’s Money in the Bank ladder match, using it as a reminder that he plans to continue wrestling after WrestleMania, so a final world title win and championship run could come in 2025.
Cena said he approached WWE with a retirement plan as to why next year would be his last. With the company in its current renaissance and impending move to Netflix, the company realized now was the best time to pursue John’s project and began negotiations.
“It really warmed my heart, and my idea of doing something that could bring us all together not only resonated, but could also bond and excite us all,” John said. “I’m happy to be a part of something like this.”
During the press conference, Chief Content Officer Paul “Triple H” Levesque was asked about the possibility of China being inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame next year. Levesque kept the option open, emphasizing that it’s John’s decision based on when it’s right for him and when it fits his schedule. Regardless of any future accolades, John is focused on pleasing the fans and making a lasting impression.
“I look forward to finishing my in-ring presence as best I can and being a member of the extended WWE family for some time to come.”
