With lots of twists and turns, drivers told ABC7 the course was more difficult to navigate than the typical donut-sized tracks commonly found in NASCAR.
Fans enjoyed NASCAR street racing despite some rain on Sunday. Cars zoomed by major city streets like Michigan Avenue and Dussable Lake Shore Drive.
Cup Series race drivers fired up their engines on Sunday afternoon and took a shot at the challenging track. It’s a 75-lap course around Chicago’s Loop.
“The electric vibes…I love it,” said Aurora resident Ryne Polko. “Looking forward to seeing Kyle Larson race…my favorite racer.”
Fans were treated to all kinds of activities throughout the day, including a concert by Laura Alaina. Keith Urban took over Grand Park with his own concert. Some fans were more excited for that than the actual race.
“I’m a big Keith Urban fan, so we get a little bit of both worlds here,” said Aurora resident Katie Polko. “It’s really exciting. Chicago is putting on a great show … ready to rock.”
If all that entertainment wasn’t enough, people got to see some tricks and flips in a special motocross event.
“Live music … motocross … back flips, front flips … seat grabs … it will make your heart skip a beat,” said Chicago resident Jason Ballinger.
After last year’s festivities were marred by heavy rains, people said this year’s event is creating the perfect atmosphere.
“It looks like the planning was great,” said Pam Schoffling from Milwaukee. “Obviously, you always learn something for the first time, but it must have gone well enough that the city brought it up, so I’m happy to be here.”
